Wegovy in detail

Wegovy is a medicine that contains an active substance called semaglutide.

Wegovy is used for weight loss and weight maintenance in adults. Wegovy primarily works by regulating your appetite, giving you a sense of satiety (‘fullness’), making you feel less hungry and experience less food cravings. This will help you eat less food and reduce your body weight.

Wegovy is also used together with reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight loss and to help keep the weight under control in adults over the age of 18, who have:

  • a BMI of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity) or
    • a BMI of at least 27 kg/m² but less than 30 kg/m² (overweight) and weight- related health problems (such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal levels of fats in the blood, breathing problems during sleep called ‘obstructive sleep apnoea’ or a history of heart attack, stroke or blood vessel problems)

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of your weight in relation to your height.

Wegovy should not be taken by anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • You are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
  • Under the age of 18.
  • Take certain medications (Our clinician will assess your suitability when you complete the online form).
  • Have end stage kidney disease.
  • History of pancreatis.
  • Have/Had an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder).
Every new patient, if approved by our clinicians, will start on the lowest dosage (0.25mg) of Wegovy for the first 4 weeks of treatment. Following this your dose will increase every month, as long as you are reacting positively to your treatment.

How often do I need to take Wegovy? You need to take your medication once, weekly. It is recommended that you inject your dose on the same day each week. Where can I inject Wegovy? You self-inject under your skin in the subcutaneous fat. The needle is small and may deliver a pin prick feeling as it is administered.

When you inject Wegovy, follow the instructions below to ensure a clean and safe administration of the drug:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.
  • Ensure the solution In your pen is colourless to slightly yellow.
  • Wipe the red inner seal with a swab.
  • Attach the needle and remove both the needle caps safely.

If the solution in your pen is cloudy or contains particles, do not administer your medication. Contact a member of the client care team to provide evidence of the un usable solution.

Never reuse or share needles with others.

Missed dose, 1-5 days after scheduled date:
  • You can take your missed dose any time within the 1-5 day period after your scheduled date, and continue with your plan as normal.

Missed dose, 5+ days after scheduled date:

  • If 5 days have passed since your last scheduled date, skip the weeks planned dose, and continue as normal the following week.

    Wegovy® is a once-weekly injection that’s given in the arm, leg or abdomen. It uses a very small, fine needle for a near-painless injection just below the surface of the skin. The Wegovy® pen comes ready to use, with a button that delivers the right amount of medication for your treatment stage. Once you’ve had the injection, remove the needle and dispose of it in a sharps bin.

    Each Wegovy® pen contains 4 doses and will therefore last 4 weeks. The strength of the injection is increased every 4 weeks until the maximum dose is reached.

    Wegovy® is one of the most effective weight loss treatments available. When used alongside a modified diet and exercise, studies have shown over almost 85% of people achieved weight loss of 5% or more, 66% achieved weight loss of 10% or more, and almost 50% achieved weight loss of 15% or more.

    We need to assess your weight once you’ve been taking Wegovy® for around 6 months. If you’ve lost 5% of your initial weight at that assessment, you are likely to be able to continue using it for up to two years with clinical guidance.

    Yes, around six months into treatment we will check in with you to find out how your weight loss is going.

    If you experience symptoms such as persistent nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea with your current Wegovy® dose, speak to our customer care team for advice. We may recommend delaying your next dose increase for a few more weeks to see if that helps improve your tolerance. We can also give you tips to help manage any symptoms and get maximum benefit from the medication. It’s important to not increase your Wegovy® dose until your body is ready, so make sure you contact MedExpress if you have persistent side effects.

    Yes, Wegovy® is licensed for weight loss in the UK.

    Always carry your Wegovy® pen in your hand luggage. Never place it in your checked baggage, as the aircraft hold can expose it to freezing temperatures that could damage the medication. Use a travel cooler to help keep your Wegovy® pen cold, especially if you’re travelling for extended periods in warm climates.

    Unopened Wegovy® pens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. If that’s not possible, the pen can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 28 days. It’s important not to use any pen that has been exposed to temperatures outside this range.

    To pass through airport security smoothly, make sure you carry your prescription with your name on it, along with the original box your medication came in. Carry your passport as your primary ID, and consider having extra proof of address (such as a utility bill) on hand in case further verification is requested.

    Airline policies on travelling with medication can vary, so it’s best to contact your specific airline ahead of time to check what’s required for carrying medication on board.

    If a dose is missed, it should be administered as soon as possible, within 5 days after the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken on the regularly scheduled day. From there, you can continue the once weekly dosing schedule.

    Yes. A major clinical trial found that Wegovy reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and death from heart disease by up to 20% in people living with obesity or who are overweight and have pre-existing heart disease — even if they don’t have diabetes.

    Wegovy can support heart health by:

    • Lowering blood pressure

    People with overweight or obesity that have pre-existing heart disease.
     
    For example, if you are living with obesity or are overweight (BMI ≥ 27), and have previously had a heart attack, a stroke or poor blood flow to the limbs, you may be eligible for treatment.
    Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy.
     
    If you are planning to become pregnant, discontinue Wegovy at least two months in advance.
    Wegovy does not impact the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill.
     
    As Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy, women of childbearing age should use effective contraception whilst using Wegovy. This includes the oral contraceptive pill, condoms or non-barrier methods.
    If you experience severe diarrhoea that lasts for over 24 hours, or vomiting within three hours of taking your oral contraceptive pill, you may need a repeat dose of your oral contraceptive pill. Contact your GP or call 111 for medical advice if this occurs.
     
    If you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, consider using a non-oral contraception method. Contact your GP to discuss your options.

    If you are planning to become pregnant, it is recommended that you wait at least two months after your last dose of Wegovy to begin trying.

    Wegovy should not be used while breastfeeding. While we don’t know for sure how Wegovy could affect a breastfed baby, a risk can’t be ruled out.
